No trip to northern Kyoto is complete without a soak in a traditional Japanese hot spring. The Tango Peninsula is blessed with natural geothermal waters and serene ocean views, offering visitors the perfect way to relax and recharge. Here are two of our favorite local onsen, both easily accessible from our hotel.
Hachiudosou – The Hidden Gem Just Steps Away
Only a few hundred meters from our hotel, Hachiudosou is a peaceful onsen tucked into the hillside with beautiful views of the Sea of Japan. Its open-air bath offers a front-row seat to the changing sky—especially stunning at sunset. The facility is simple but well-kept, with both indoor and outdoor baths, and it’s often quiet, giving you a true sense of rural tranquility. Perfect for a spontaneous soak without a long journey.

The outdoor bath faces west, making it an ideal place to catch the sunset while soaking in mineral-rich waters. Ukawa also has a restaurant and rest area, so you can easily turn your visit into a half-day outing. Onsen Etiquette for First-Time Visitors
If it’s your first time visiting a Japanese onsen, don’t worry—we’re happy to guide you through the basics:
-
Wash thoroughly before entering the bath
-
Swimsuits aren’t allowed; you bathe nude (men and women have separate baths)
-
Towels should stay out of the water
-
Relax, stay quiet, and enjoy the moment
Let us know at the front desk if you’d like help with directions or if you'd like to borrow a small towel for your onsen adventure.
